Reading Like a Serpent

Many remember The Scarlet Letter as required reading for reluctant sixteen year olds. The unnamed, elusive narrator of Hawthorne's ""tale of human frailty and sorrow"" is--some readers might say maddeningly--indirect, ambiguous, and inconsistent.
