The Shepherd and the Morning Star: Two Lives Apart

In 1974 the leader of the Ulster Unionists in Westminster disappeared. At the same his son, a hill shepherd in the West Highlands of Scotland hds a disabling tractor accident and decided to enrol in Stirling University where he embraced socialism. Willie Orr was that son. His father's career ended as he was forced to resign, his affection for a woman overwhelming his enjoyment of privilege - he was Grand Master of the Orange Order and was not divorced, and she wa of the opposite faith. Rather than fulfil a promise to marry her, he 'disappeared' but news of the betrayal circulated. He faded from the political scene while his son became a teacher, specialising in troubled adolescents and fostering children from List D schools. This is the true story of one man's shocking journey from being an arts-loving student mingling with the Celtic Twilight crowd in Dublin, to the hardline religious and political bigot he was to become.
