Elizabeth Mitchell war Lehrerin in New York als sie 1990 entdeckte, dass Erwachsene und Kinder über die Musik oft besser kommunizieren können als durch Worte. Sie fand Bestätigung in den Liedern für Mütter und Kinder von Woodie Guthrie und begann bald, eigene Lieder zu schreiben und vor Familien und Kindern aufzutreten. Ihr erstes Album mit dem Titel "You Are My Flower" nahm sie schließlich 1998 auf. Die Musik von Elizabeth Mitchell ist klassischer amerikanischer Folk mit traditionellen Instrumenten wie Gitarre, Banjo und Fidel. Die einfachen Texte trägt sie mit einer wunderschönen klaren Stimme vor.
