Published alongside its London premiere and prior to its screening as a BBC film: another of Mitchell's suspense-laden plays showing the 'hard men' in Northern Ireland horribly failing to come to grips with the political realities Ulster Defence Association members, Kyle and Freddie help the cause by robbing cigarette warehouses and distributing the fags to selected clubs. But with the UDA's push towards political acceptance underway, this sort of scam is now taboo. Kyle decides to toe the line, but Freddie goes his own way, launching a masked raid on their local club. 'Good boy' Kyle is recruited by the newly wary high command to carry out a punishment beating on his former friend - with fatal consequences...Once again Gary Mitchell has turned the terrible tensions in Northern Ireland into thrilling, if doom-laden drama. As the Beast Sleeps was premiered in Belfast in April and has its London opening at the Tricycle Theatre in September. It has been made into a BBC film for screening later this year.
