Avery Turner never intended to return to Youngstown once he left. Beyond Calvaras Bridge weaves back and forth between the present-twenty-six years after the event in Avery Turner's life-and the past when that event took place. After moving to the small Iowa town of Youngstown, Avery experienced life-changing encounters, strange occurrences, adventures of teenage life, and built long-lasting friendships. Avery was forced to deal with his own prejudices, the unrestrained racism in the heartland of the United States, teenage suicide, love lost, and depression. After avoiding his past for over twenty-five years, Avery is finally forced to face his fears, failures, and dreams. Through Avery's memory and his experiences with his former classmates, the reader identifies with one's constant battle to understand good vs. evil, love, race relations, suffering, death, and redemption.
