The Union corporal having served out the time of his muster has become so personally devastated by the effects of his participation in five major battles in thirteen months; he makes the decision to leave the war for whatever new life he may find in the west. While scavenging the now deserted, ghostly battlefield for supplies for his trip, he encounters a severely wounded Confederate Officer.
