Elle est à l'origine de la maison de haute couture Chanel, " symbole de l'élégance française ". Elle est issue d'une lignée de marchands forains cévenols, de Ponteils-et-Brésis près d'Alès. Elle est la fille d'Albert Chanel, un camelot originaire du Gard et de Jeanne Devolle, couturière originaire de Courpière, tous deux établis à Saumur.
