This book argues that the primary political technology of the US apparatuses of government is to construct the identities to be intervened upon as Other of the normal citizen, that is, as pathological identities that both cause periodical order-threatening crises in US liberalism and reconfirm the normality of the proper bourgeois subject. Othering accounts for this government's bringing into being and forcefully reiterating a patriarchal, racist and eugenic order of reality. In particular, the apparatuses that govern reproduction systematically 'discover' as pathological the heterogeneous Others that US liberalism has been constructing since its inception and further concentrate them in the figure of an 'irresponsible mother'.
