Jesma and her brother Jesmir believe they are safe in the capital city of their homeland. Tamrin sleeps soundly, happy in the knowledge his friends are secure.
But Shen can't sleep. He knows what the others don't - the real threat doesn't hunt from afar, it lurks inside their own walls. Forced to flee from home, Jesma and Jesmir uncover forbidden truths to magic; truths that could destroy civilization. And as each grows in power, so too does the distance between them. Bonded by blood but divided by the very power they've unleashed, the twins loyalties to one another are tested.
On the run, and in search of the truth, shadows from Shen's past reappear, each with their own agenda, and Shen once again believes only he can save everyone. But when his arrogance causes harm to those he loves, Shen must learn hard lessons or lose everything.
