Layoffs have become a normal operating tool of modern companies. The system around them is extensive: legal review, HR scripts, severance templates, access shutdown, communications plans. The system around the person being let go is almost nothing-a meeting invite, a frozen laptop, a final paycheck, and a race against the clock.
Impacted is a clear-eyed account of that imbalance, written from inside the layoff. It moves from the night before a layoff to the machinery that produces one, and argues that the deepest failure is not the layoff itself, but the missing infrastructure between employment and re-employment.
Drawing on lived experience and hard questions about trust, risk, and dignity at work, it makes the case for the transition layer that should already exist-and for treating job loss as the predictable risk it has become, not a private emergency people are left to survive on luck alone.
