This book reviews the basic theory of Ca2+ oscillations (common to almost all cell types), including spatio-temporal behaviors such as waves, and then also some of the theory of mathematical models of electrical bursting in pituitary cells. Through these examples one can see clearly how multiple oscillatory processes interact within a cell, and how mathematical methods can be used to understand such interactions better. The second part of the volume explains the interaction of cytosolic Ca2+ with membrane ion channels that results in the complex patterns of electrical spiking that we see in cells.
