Reliability, Maintainability, and Supportability focuses on the core systems engineering tasks of writing, managing, and tracking requirements, with special applications in the fields of defense, aerospace, transportation, telecommunications, electric power, and energy. Many sustainability engineers use oversimplified models and tools to deal with sustainability engineering tasks, and consequently miss opportunities to develop more thorough and informative product management and improvement plans at lower cost. Systems engineers, in particular, because of the broad scope of their responsibilities, need support in order to write good sustainability requirements, understand the results provided to them by sustainability engineering specialists, and track compliance. Further, many software tools, while essential for executing complex sustainability engineering tasks, may incorporate simplifying assumptions, rely on the user to discern when results are reasonable, and do not give the user insight into what to reasonably expect from the tool. Reliability, Maintainability, and Supportability addresses these challenges.
