The field of solid-state ionics is growing at a rapid rate, particularly in the area of advanced high-voltage lithium batteries and fuel cells. The main driving force for such unprecedented growth is the global transformation into an information society, which requires heavy use of communication and data processing equipment requiring high-energy-density storage devices. Other strong influences are environmental issues and therefore, electric-based transportation, which requires electrochemical power sources, may soon replace traditional combustion technology.
