It's senior year of high school - the final obstacle to freedom. Lavender has spent her life grinding at her studies, coping with insomnia and an exceptionally unremarkable life. With her graduation on the horizon, all she can think about is leaving, escaping her hometown and its unforgiving high desert heat.
What she doesn't anticipate is the appearance of a group of new kids at school - namely, Canaan. She can't decide what's so intriguing about him: his own captivation with her, his sparkling, color-changing eyes, or the fact that he's clearly hiding something that seems to tie into her uncannily realistic nightmares.
Her nights become plagued by red-eyed creatures that are after her blood. Her dreams carry over into her waking life in the form of phantom pains, and even more strangely, Canaan appears with injuries identical to what she's feeling. Out of concern and curiosity, she tries to pry answers from him, but he proves stubborn in keeping his distance.
As it turns out, the truth is complicated, not to mention deadly. There's a whole world of monsters lurking among and feeding off of humans, along with a secret society responsible for destroying them. Her worst nightmares have come to life - yet she finds herself cured of her insomnia, finding solace in knowing what's been going on.
The consequence of learning this new reality is that she has to conceal it from those closest to her. Along with that, she now has a target on her back, and finds herself brushing with death on multiple occasions.
Is her peace of mind worth gambling on her life?
