Is it not true, however, that in this generation we often find much ado being carried on by patriots who apparently are blind to their negations of What that docu ment declares? This is the very substance of idolatry: the use of a symbol as an end in itself. Let us turn, then, to our scrip tures, to the Declaration itself, and to the revelation of our Lord. The prophet Isaiah declares to the people Of Judah that they shall have a strong city when God's salvation stands as the walls and bulwarks of that city! Salvation that is, right relationship with God - shall be the only walls and bulwarks necessary to make their city strong. And the gates of that city shall be opened to the righteous nation which keeps the truth. Let us keep this before us as we look at the theological assumptions of the Declaration.
