Climate Change Impacts and Women's Livelihood

Vulnerability in Developing Countries

Women in rural Bangladesh are heavily influenced by several climatic events, such as cyclones, floods and seasonal droughts that periodically affect the region. Yet very few studies focus on the vulnerability of women in the context of climate change.

This book addresses this gap by investigating the structure of women's livelihoods and coping capacity in a disaster-prone coastal area of Bangladesh. Climate change impacts mean women face several challenges in their livelihoods, such as income, household assets, health, food security, education, water sources, sanitation and transportation systems. Chapters look at the importance of relevant policy for all of those involved in disaster and risk management, both on a rural Bangladeshi and international level. This book provides recommendations to improving the livelihoods of women in coastal communities.

It will appeal to academics, researchers and professionals in environmental management, gender and development. It will be useful to individuals studying climate change governance who are looking at the effects of and adaptation to climate change, gender issues and natural disaster management strategies.
